“Wishing everybody a Happy New Year and I thank everybody”–

is greetings sent to our group from a 2nd Mesa friend today.  He was in the midst of a family gathering in preparation for a baby naming that will happen at dawn tomorrow.

2nd Mesa religious society participants will be in prayer ceremony all weekend in preparation for the summer growing season (not open to the public).  “Everything is renewed during winter when life is dormant.”  Next month during February, the mid-winter time, “life is starting to come back”, and that marks the time of the Bean Dances. Youth will bring their energy and prayers in with Buffalo Dances the last part of this month.

I am personally inspired by the amount of energy that Hopi people put into this ancestral winter practice of winter blessing of the seeds you want to grow during the coming year.  I feel it is a good reminder for all.  And with every prayer, deeply felt gratitude is offered for the positive continuance of life.

We thank all who supported this project with your regard for Hopi people and with your donations, time helping us at donation tables, and with shopping, accounting, loading, packing and delivery!  December 18 was our delivery day.  Once at Hopi,  we split into 4 delivery groups with Hopi hosts taking lead, and went to to several villages. We really appreciate the support of all who contributed to make this happen!

We made 48 pre-school and several dozen other grade level specific learning packets this year plus high school art and sports supplies which the youth really enjoyed receiving.  We are more and more investing our budget in things that will add to longer term sustainability.

We thank the many people in our community who made up hygiene sets for elders — they were much appreciated by the recipients (we did not have money in our budget to purchase these items).    We also took new coats and clothing for kids along with gifts from our community and food for families.

See more photos here.

We also looked at the proposed site for the new Youth Center which we are raising funds to build this year. Please see and share poster here.

I thank Kathy Dunham for her help with the youth center computer set up and downloading their photos and videos that we will help them make into an educational video.  I thank Jackie Klieger for her on-going support as our official photographer.  Thank you to Deborah Williams for her continuing admin work to keep track of our budget.

Our appreciation to Jay’s Bird Barn and the Village Welcome Center for hosting a gift donation box for us during the holiday season. Thank you to Chris Jones of the Great Southwest Gallery for again hosting our donation barrel from Thanksgiving to end of the year and for the excellent coordination with Tlaquepaque.  Wendy Lippman, the general manager, worked with us to bring a Hopi dance group down in early December to Tlaquepaque and arranged for us to have a donation table there for the first time during holiday events.  A big thank you to Wendy!

We send you and our Hopi neighbors regards for a bountiful 2017!

Sincerely,

Sandra Cosentino, Project Manager
