unnamed (7)Hopi Sharing at Cultural Weekend

This past weeked was our Fall cultural event at the Verde Valley Archaeology Center in Camp Verde and Sedona.  I especially enjoyed the lively sharing of a young Hopi katsina carver in the traditional style. Justin Tso spoke of the complex network of materials, meaning and styles.  Art is certainly part of his cultural life.  People gained a greater understanding of that. (see his photo to right)

RamsonHopiFarmTalkMdRamson Lomatewama gave an insightful visual talk in our center on some of the meanings of corn in Hopi thought.  The corn plant is like our children, he told us.  The male has the role to impregnate the womb of Mother Earth with the seed and tend to it.  He is learning father skills.  The corn plant is a female and “if the male is not going to commit to seeing it through to harvest, don’t impregnate.”

“Sing to your corn is what our elders taught so your children (the corn) will know you are coming.  Make them happy so they grow better.  Weeds are the bad habits of your children. Can’t eliminate all weeds, the best you can do is keep them in check.”

Please Consider sponsoring some Hopi Pre-Schoolers this Year!

We will soon have a list of up to 50 Hopi pre-schoolers in need of support and invite people to sign up to support one of more of these children as follows:

–new winter coat and sweatsuit, socks, hat, gloves, underwear
–children’s books their parents can read to them
–coloring books and pre-school workbooks and coordination building playthings
–nutrition support such as nuts, dried fruit.

We will give you the child’s first name and clothing size and address of the Hopi office to send them to who will deliver them to the kids.  You could send a single box this fall or send more during the year as you choose.

Please send me your name, phone, email and how many kids you want to support and if you have a preference for boy or girl.  I hope to fill our list with sponsors.

Hopi Head Start Classroom & Playground Projects

This year we are focusing part of our fundraising to supporting providing needed classroom supplies to the 5 Head Start classes which had their slim funding further reduced this year and to helping seed a playground renovation project at one of the 5 schools.

I just spoke with director Rayma Duyongwa, who is dreaming of starting playground renovation projects.  She says they have lots of local people with building skills willing to help, but they need equipment, lumber, etc.  Her dream is to have a natural type playground with things for the kids to do to build their skills plus a secure storage area outside to store equipment.  Right now they only have a basic playground set.

One school had some fruit trees donated which the kids help tend.  And one school had a very successful garden project.  She would like to see this extended to other schools.  Rayma is very jazzed about this and so am I.

How about you?

Please Google Natural Playground design images and you will get the idea of what she is dreaming about for those kids.
