Currently the Hopi Head Start Program serves 195 children in 4 classrooms. We welcome donations in support of these children. The Hopi program is uniquely designed to work within their own cultural setting. Many children would greatly benefit with extra support such as clothing, food, learning books, flash cards, and sports items to help develop coordination such as hula hoops, jump ropes, balls.
Information provided by the Hopi Head Start:
Hopi Head Start serves Early Literacy for children ages 3-5. Hopi Head Start provides services to children who come from low income families, 49% of those who come from high income families and children with disabilities. We offer a comprehensive program that incorporates health, nutrition, education, family and community partnership, parent involvement, disabilities, and mental health.
Children who have been diagnosed with a disability or are suspected of having a disability are given priority in enrollment.
Hopi Head Start Program Mission Statement:
Our mission is to give our Hopi children an environment in which they can be creative as well as develop a sense of cultural identity. Our aim is to reinforce the Hopi children with a positive program that will lead to a higher level of self-esteem and creativity. Our program is designed to provide volunteers who will interact with Hopi children in projects that will stimulate their developmental process. This would involve a safe, caring, nurturing environment where growth not only involves acquiring basic skills, but also involves developing self-esteem and a sense of social development in a non-competitive environment in which children, teachers, and parents are partners in learning.Below is a photo page from a special harvest program done at First Mesa in conjunction with Hopi traditional agriculture:
